AO 2017 (R2): No battle this time, as Venus Williams ease past Stefanie Voegele

Venus Williams got a 6-3 6-2 easy win against Stefanie Voegele in one hour and 23 minutes.

In the first match on Rod Laver Arena, the world nº17 met the qualifier Voegele to play for a place in the third round. Pulling out of doubles, everyone was worried about Venus physical conditions. After a tough first round win, the former world nº1 stepped out under the Australian sun with the goal to grab the win and avoid to spend too much time on the court.
The American started her mission playing safe and with no errors to take a 3-0 double break lead. With the pressure of facing such a champion, the Swiss managed to win her first two games after taking a break back and holding serve. But it was not enough to create some problems for Venus, as her strong and aggressive game took the control of the match. By winning the next three games of four the set was hers.
The story was not so different in the second, Williams continued with her consistency and showed no sign of any injury. "Today was a good day, a little less hot first thing in the morning, so it was good to get it in, you know, and have a win early."

In the next match, the Champion will meet Duan Ying-Ying, a player that never faced before. "I don't know anything about her. I have never seen her play. Zero, like zero. So I'm going to have to see how it goes. Like, maybe get a scouting report in the warm-up when we hit the five minutes and kind of see how it feels."
